Two minutes, six questions

Can I retire in Spain?

There is no single Spanish residency, and no visa called the retirement visa. Which route is open to you is decided almost entirely by your passport and by where your pension comes from. This tells you which — in plain English, before you spend anything.

Your likely route

You do not need a visa. You need to register — and to claim your S1.

As an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen you have the right to live in Spain, subject to meeting the conditions for stays over three months. For a retiree that means showing sufficient means and healthcare cover, then registering.

The part worth more than everything else on this page: if you draw a state pension, your home country can keep paying for your healthcare here through an S1 form. That puts you in the Spanish public system with no monthly premium and no exclusion for pre-existing conditions. A great many EU retirees never find out they qualify.

This is the cheapest and fastest route into Spain. It is also the one most people do in the wrong order, because each office wants the document the previous one issued.

  • Request your S1 from your home country

Before you move. It is issued by the country paying your pension, not by Spain.

    You
  • Model what Spain will tax

Which pension is taxed where depends on the treaty. Do this before selling anything.

This is an orientation, not a decision. Immigration and tax rules change, and your documents, dates and family situation can move you onto a different route. Before you act on any of it, a qualified immigration lawyer and a tax adviser review your actual case — that review is what SpainEase is for.

Your likely route

A non-lucrative visa — and quite possibly an S1 as well

Since Brexit you are a third-country national, so the route is a non-lucrative residence visa, applied for at the Spanish consulate in the UK before you move: proof of means, full private health insurance, clean criminal record, medical certificate, and no work in Spain.

But because you draw a UK state or public service pension, there is a second question that is worth thousands: whether an S1 form can transfer your healthcare cost to the UK once you are resident. Entitlement depends on your circumstances and dates, and it is one of the most valuable things to establish early.

Your pension type also changes your tax bill. Government and public service pensions are commonly taxable only in the UK under the treaty, while the UK state pension is generally taxable in Spain once you are resident here. Two neighbours with identical incomes can pay very different amounts.

  • Establish whether you qualify for an S1

Before you buy private insurance you may not need long term.

    SpainEase
  • Model the tax on each of your pensions

State, occupational and public service pensions are treated differently.

  • Insurance the consulate will accept for the visa

Full cover, no co-payments. Refused policies are the commonest cause of failure.

The non-lucrative visa is your route

You are a non-EU national planning to live in Spain on income you already have. That is exactly what the non-lucrative residence visa is for, and it is the standard route for retirees from outside the EU.

You apply at the Spanish consulate covering where you live, before moving. The tests are money and cover: sufficient income or savings measured against the IPREM indicator, and full private health insurance from a Spanish-authorised insurer with no co-payments. Plus a clean criminal record and a medical certificate in specific wording.

One consequence to understand before you start, because it is rarely explained: to renew this visa you must actually live here, which means passing 183 days a year — which makes you Spanish tax resident on your worldwide income. The visa and the tax position arrive together.

  • Check your income and savings against this year’s threshold

The figure is indexed and moves annually.

  • Model what Spain will tax, before you commit

Including any lump sum, which is often taxable here when it was not at home.

This needs a conversation before a questionnaire

You have told us there is ongoing treatment or a recent diagnosis in the household. We are not going to give you an automated answer about that, because insurance, timing and route all change — and the wrong sequence here is expensive in ways that matter more than money.

What we can tell you now: an S1 form, if you qualify for one, puts you in the Spanish public system with no exclusion for pre-existing conditions. That is the single most important thing to establish. If you do not qualify, private insurance for a visa is still possible, but which insurer and which wording becomes the whole question.

We will look at your actual situation with an adviser, at no cost, and we will tell you honestly if we think you should not move yet. We have said that before and we would rather say it than take your fee.

  • Tell us the diagnosis, the treatment and the dates

In confidence. It changes everything downstream.

    You
  • Establish S1 entitlement first

Public cover with no exclusions beats any private policy.

    SpainEase
  • If not, find an insurer that will accept the condition

    SpainEase
  • Honest view on whether and when to move

    Including “not yet”.

Your likely route

If you will keep working, this is a different route

You have said you will keep earning, even part-time or remotely. That rules out the non-lucrative visa, which expressly does not permit economic activity — and it is much better to know that now than to discover it at a renewal.

If you hold an EU passport this is straightforward: you register, and you can work. If you do not, there are routes for remote workers and for self-employment, each with its own requirements and its own tax treatment.

We specialise in retirement, so we will be straight with you: if your case is really a working-age relocation, we will say so and point you to someone who does that all day. If it is a retirement with a little consultancy on the side, that is a conversation worth having properly.

  • Tell us what the work actually is, and for whom

Employed abroad, own company, or occasional consultancy — they lead different places.

    You
  • Confirm the right route with an immigration lawyer

  • Tax position, which is where this gets interesting

Your likely route

Your case needs a person, not a form

Your answers do not point cleanly at one route — usually because the income question is still open, or because your household opens a family route that the obvious answer would miss.

That is a good reason to talk to someone rather than keep clicking. Tell us your nationality, what you will live on, and roughly when, and we will come back with the routes that are genuinely open to you.

Some situations do not fit a questionnaire

A dependent parent, a diagnosis you are weighing up, a house you already own, a child who moved here first. Send us the complicated version.
